I can understand how you felt about the ulnvoed sketchbooks. When I was in High School I remember my teacher had the class do art journals, but since it was an elective class, everyone did the assignments. I also remember my teacher giving us prompts, which were helpful at the time. I tried the same type of project with a group of high school drawing and painting students and they were not so accepting. There was a lot of small drawings, notes, blank pages, erased attempts and lost effort. I think the problem is the relationship the student has to the sketchbook. It shouldn't feel like work, and I'm struggling with how assessment can work with artist journals/sketchbooks.
