Airport lounge. For me, listening to good klezmer is always a kind of tightrope walk between the feeling of deep-rooted sadness it generates at one level, and the feeling of anti-gravity that rides above it all. Freylekh puts all this right on the plate. And they have a new CD out too — Nippon Klezmer. It’s great, and has wonderful cover art illustrating the legend of Momotaro. The second part pits Nietzsche and Darwin against each other, their blind spots read against the other, extending and elaborating on a thought that was beyond both of them. As Darwin’s materiality is configured with the evolution of matter, its succession and sexual selection, Nietzsche provides the motivating forces that underpin such material and immaterial transformations argued through his concepts of the untimely and the return.
inside my mother
I make a little fist
and then I punch her
enter another plane
walk right into it
the roaring begins
a few hours later
I stride ashore
How is it far if you think of it? Hello, Jude! May you enjoy the ride, my dear. Reading Bhanu will be a great pleasure: “I also want to make a red clay burrow filled with peacock feathers. I also want to carve a spot in my forehead and set an oil lamp there, like a man in a cave in Rishikesh that my uncle once met and told me of. Nothing I write approaches this. Last night, read Allen Ginsberg’s essay on meditation and writing in the bath. A quick, inexpensive healing bath: add ginger powder and baking soda to a very hot bath. Lie in it with a towel on the front of your body. Stay in for 20 minutes if you can. Take sips of cold water. Remember to bring a cup of water with you.” I think the call to “keep calm and carry on” is everywhere because we are in a crisis, over the edge, living the end and one step from total panic (for a slightly different demographic the analogous meme is YOLO). It repeats a British slogan because the British handled their decline much better than we are. They offered a kind of social welfare -- national health, housing, education -- that eased the pain a bit. I started thinking about the demand for calm down during my yoga class today. The instructor mentioned the Connecticut shootings and then told people to focus on the positive. She advised the class not to turn on the news and to be mindful of our breathing. I don’t think the instructor is an idiot, bless her heart. She’s just repeating what she's heard over and over and over again for a decade, since the world ended and instead of joining the rest of the world as one of many facing common problems the US suffered a psychotic break. For some, this psychosis manifests itself via an intransigent attachment to the power the country no longer has, except for its nuclear arsenal, which gives it its remaining power, the power to destroy. For others it manifests itself via the delusion that we can go back, become Keynesians again, return to the social democratic road we didn’t take. For still others it’s in the desperate hope that they can seize enough -- money, weapons, things -- to keep the rest of us so far away that we can’t do any damage.
