I
By the road to the contagious hospital
under the surge of the blue
mottled clouds driven from the
northeast-a cold wind. Beyond, the
waste of broad, muddy fields
brown with dried weeds, standing and fallen
patches of standing water
the scattering of tall trees
stuff of bushes and small trees
with dead, brown leaves under them
leafless vines-
Lifeless in appearance, sluggish
dazed spring approaches-
They enter the new world naked,
cold, uncertain of all
save that they enter. All about them
the cold, familiar wind-
Now the grass, tomorrow
the stiff curl of wildcarrot leaf
One by one objects are defined-
It quickens: clarity, outline of leaf
But now the stark dignity of
entrance- Still, the profound change
has come upon them: rooted, they
grip down and begin to awaken
I have a 60 mins 1988 vhs via Voices & Visions that takes us into this
"contagious hospital" ( abandoned, delapidated, shards of glass in the courtyard, etc).
The film: a documentary made in 1988 by The New York Center for Visual History (and repackaged by Voices & Visions in 1999).
WCW is HUGE ! try his essays. My 1965-67 teacher/friend, Rudd Fleming & his wife Polly were very close to the Williams.

that is felt." -WCW

here is the vhs that I have:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1572527978/ref=olp_product_details?ie=UTF8&me=&seller=
now this company Lerner (Voices & Visions) sell packages of things lige this
for BIG BUCKS to (mostly) university teachers to use in classes...
they sell the film AND all kinds of "study guides" so that everyone
in every course in every university in our entire country STUDIES THE EXACT SAME POINT OF VIEW and take the EXACT SAME TESTS ....
I think I paid about $20 for my copy... new. It's been frequently played on PBS but not in the past dozen years or so.....
there are other terrific docs re: other poets....
the last person-poet friend of mine who (also) knew WCW
(and in fact was part of that "Objectivist" group in Manhattan)
was Ted Enslin.... who recently died.
