reminds me of those old charlie tuna tv commercials. charlie was always bummed he was never chosen because he wasn't a starkist tuna. should he have been chosen he would've been eaten. therefore, charlie's great desire was to be consumed.
the metaphors of desire are also signs for comsumption, 'i can just eat you up!' etc etc.

Spot on, Richard. I could add that, Charlie was not presented as depressed and suicidal, just slightly stupid and working class (his accent). So I think he can also be read as wanting to be employed (which is another form of wanting to be consumed). He was normalizing the horror of life under midcentury capitalism. Success = death, in a way. If you are bored sometime, I think you would really enjoy Adorno's "The Stars Down to Earth", which is a mid-50s essay on the LA Times astrology column.
I should add that the title for this is my brother's, and he ties it to the book of photos of last meals (a slightly earlier post), so he's saying pretty much the same thing.

In my mind I have my own coffee-table book of a variety of happy, chubby Cows, Pigs, and Chickens that I have seen preparing chunks of their brethren to be consumed by people unable to perceive the overt allusions to cannibalism.
I'd have published it by now if I weren't so ADD. LOL.

reminds me, guy, of that old gary larson cartoon. in the panel was a group of cows in a barn. they were huddled around another cow who was seated. before the seated cow was a plate. on that plate was a big, fat steak. tucking in to the steak the cow says, 'it tastes like chicken.'

Just in case you didn't know, guys, there's a word for self-cannibalism (and no for once I'm not going to say "capitalism'!) it's autosarcophagy. I managed to use it in my poem.
Oh, and Guy, next time a list of greatest books never written comes out, I'll be sure to add yours.
